Twardzik Honors Former 123rd District Representative Edward ‘EJ’ Lucyk
November 7, 2025
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill) joined fellow legislators in Harrisburg to honor former state Rep. Edward “EJ” Lucyk. Lucyk represented the 123rd Legislative District for 11 terms from 1980 to 2002, the same district Twardzik now serves.
House Resolution 359, introduced by Rep. Tim Brennan (D-Bucks) and cosponsored by Reps. Jamie Barton (R-Schuylkill) and Twardzik, recognizes Lucyk’s distinguished public service, military achievements and lasting impact on Schuylkill County.
“EJ Lucyk was a respected leader who served his community and his country with integrity and heart,” said Twardzik. “He cared deeply about Schuylkill County and always worked to make life better for the people he represented. His legacy continues to inspire those of us who now serve in the same region he proudly called home.”
Brennan spoke in the House chamber, noting Lucyk’s many accomplishments throughout his service in the military and the state House, and that he epitomizes the incredible influence a good person can have on those around them.
“EJ Lucyk was one of those rare individuals who excelled at everything he put his mind to, who casually accomplished what many could only dream of and who etched a legacy of success in every endeavor,” said Brennan. “At the same time, EJ is best remembered by those who knew him for his loyalty, his compassion, curiosity, integrity, generosity and collegiality. And, his unique humor that accompanied his otherwise rough exterior.”
Brennan recalled growing up on the same block as Lucyk’s legislative district office and visiting it as a child to meet his staff and learn about the work of a state legislator, describing Lucyk as a role model and “symbol of something to be proud of: our government.”
He also spoke about getting to work briefly with Lucyk more than 20 years ago and looking forward to the days Lucyk would be in the office, eager to listen to his mentor’s stories about life, including his experiences serving as a captain of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
“What I learned in those years was how well EJ threaded the needle of greatness and goodness. His biggest accomplishments weren’t what I saw as a kid, or what you can read in a bio,” said Brennan. “He was a kind, encouraging, thoughtful person who was ever-present behind what he did and what he accomplished. I can only hope to remember his example, and how important we are as representatives to those watching us or looking up to us, both by virtue of the titles we hold and how we carry them.”
Lucyk, a native of Shenandoah, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served two tours in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. After his military service, he went on to represent the Coal Region for more than two decades in the state House, where he was known for his strong advocacy for veterans, working families and community development.
“EJ’s leadership and dedication left a mark on the 123rd District and beyond,” Twardzik added. “It was a privilege to help honor his memory and recognize the many ways he made Pennsylvania a better place.”
Lucyk passed away earlier this year, just weeks before his 83rd birthday. Members of his family, including his daughter, Tara Gensler, and son, Matt Lucyk, joined legislators in the House chamber for the formal introduction of the resolution, along with Tara’s husband, Todd Gensler, and EJ’s granddaughter, Margaux Gensler.
Also in attendance were former Rep. Neal Goodman, House Speaker Keith McCall, former Congressman Tim Holden, and Sherri Hammer, who began her career with Lucyk as an intern in 1994. Hammer later worked with Goodman for 17 years and now manages the 123rd District office for Twardzik.
