HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill) attended a joint session of the General Assembly today to hear Gov. Josh Shapiro outline his budget proposal for the 2023-24 fiscal year. He issued the following statement in response:
“Every budget starts off as a wish list, reminiscent of my Christmas list, compiled while paging through the Sears Toy Catalog. We now need to be the ‘responsible parents’ who review the list and carefully consider what’s best and spend wisely. The budget requires careful consideration, and we will spend the next few months doing that review. We have the strong Rainy Day Fund and should not deplete it as bigger economic storms may be expected. I hope to find ways to cut waste and fraud moving forward.”
Twardzik noted the governor’s address is just the beginning of the annual budget process. The House Appropriations Committee will conduct a series of hearings starting Monday, March 20, to examine the details of the governor’s plan and how state departments and agencies are spending their funding. A schedule of the hearings and more information on the 2023-24 budget is available at
