State Recreational Improvement Grants Awarded, Says Twardzik

HARRISBURG – State funding has been awarded for two recreational improvement projects in Schuylkill County, according to Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill), who played a role in securing the grants. The funding was made available through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2), which is administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

The Schuylkill River County Greenway Association was awarded $300,000 for a variety of purposes, including a five-year strategic plan update; feasibility study for a one-mile segment of the Schuylkill River Trail; design and construction of a boat launch; design of river access in Cumru Township; and other outdoor programming.

“The Schuylkill River Trail is a fabulous asset to expand in our county,” said Twardzik. “The beauty of our area is highlighted, and it attracts visitors, stimulates investment and provides recreational opportunities for all.”

In addition, Mahanoy City Borough was awarded $80,000 to further develop Kaier’s Park, including the installation of new play equipment, lighting and utilities; landscaping improvements; and other site upgrades.

“While it is no longer part of my 123rd Legislative District, I am proud to have worked with Sen. Dave Argall to secure funding for these improvements to Kaier’s Park. I was born and raised in northern Schuylkill County. An adaptation of the old saying is true – you can take the town out of my district, but you can’t take me out of my hometown area,” Twardzik noted. “I am happy to work with Sen. Argall and Rep. Dane Watro to make sure all of Schuylkill County continues to get the attention and assistance from Harrisburg it deserves.”

C2P2 grants were created to promote conservation and recreation-focused projects and programs. They are awarded to municipalities and authorized nonprofit organizations for recreation, park and conservation projects. Funding is generated from a portion of the realty transfer tax, the Environmental Stewardship Fund, fees for ATV/Snowmobile licenses and federal monies.
